What a fantastic response from the Liverpool Santa Dash community

On a freezing cold Sunday morning [the temperature was below zero I believe] I gathered my camera, put on my gloves, defrosted the car and drove to Liverpool City Center for what promised to be the best Liverpool Santa Dash ever. I couldn’t run this year due to a recurring foot injury.
On my arrival into ‘town’, I began my quest to photograph Liverpool’s Santas in all their glory before, during and after the event.

After arriving at the Mann Island area of Liverpool’s World famous Pier Head, it wasn’t long before the freezing cold Santas began assembling for the beginning of the race, I admit I felt out of place but I was much warmer than most! I was glad to see local media around and about, the race MC was Alan Jackson of BBC Radio Merseyside. A fabulous job as usual from ‘our Alan’.
I took my position and waited for the race to begin. Alan Rothwell [the organiser] turned up after last minute checks, ensuring the course was safe for the thousands of Santas.
After the usual ten second count down, the race began and the competitive Santas dashed off as fast as they could without slipping. I witnessed a rather silly lady with a push chair arrive as the race began who preceded to walk towards the start line from the wrong side, rather from behind the start sign. She was quickly surrounded and engulfed by hundreds of runners putting herself and the child in the push chair at some considerable risk.

I didn’t hang around and quickly walked towards the finish line, in front of Liverpool’s wonderful Town Hall. It was an amazing site to look down Liverpool’s Dale Street towards Churchill Way and see the thousands of Santas in the distance, zigzagging over the flyover. It wasn’t long before the runners began arriving home to a shower of snow.
It amazes me how these athletes complete it in such a quick time, one of the first finishers even ran it with his child on his shoulders, stopping after wards to check his time!

Shortly after, I decided to ‘call it a day’ and take the cold walk back to the car feeling rather sorry for myself due to me inability to run this year. Ah well, roll on Liverpool Santa Dash 2009!
