Many of you will have noticed a number of blue Santas in the 2009 Santa Dash. There were around 300 Evertonians running in their favourite colour on behalf of the Everton Foundation and this year there will be once again a limited number of blue suits.

If you wish to run in a blue Santa suit and run on behalf of the Everton Foundation then please download the special Everton Foundation Entry Form when you enter.

Yes – the Liverpool Santa Dash is back again and in 2010 we are targeting 10,000 entries to ensure we get the World Santa Challenge title back from Las Vegas.

In 2009 we were beaten by just a few Santas and it was hugely disappointing to see the first World Santa Challenge title and the trophy go across the pond. The official numbers entered in the Great Santa Run in Vegas was a staggering 8,868 although more than 1,000 didn’t actually take part. So – to be safe we are targeting 10,000 for Liverpool this year.

If you haven’t taken part before then you’ve never seen anything like it. It is something special to see and be a part of. If you have done it before then it’s great to have you back. Bring your friends, relatives and anyone else you know and let’s make sure the title comes back to Liverpool this year!

Liverpool Santa Dash 2010 First Details Are Emerging!

Expectations are high, the excitement is building and you are beginning to wonder when the deatils are going to emerge aren’t you?

Well, latest info from the Santa Dash 2010 camp suggest that this year….

*The target is for 10,000 runners!
*Las Vegas, Tasmania and Dublin/ Belfast are interested in getting involved!
*Radio City may be involved again!

LAS VEGAS CONFIRMED AS 1ST WINNERS OF THE WORLD SANTA CHALLENGE!

Organisers of the Great Santa Run in Las Vegas have confirmed their final numbers of Santas in their 2009 event as 7,094 which is just 142 more than the Dashing Santas of Liverpool! So, the winners of the first World Santa Challenge are Opportunity Village, representing the city of Las Vegas.

The Great Santa Run will be the first recipients of the World Santa Challenge Trophy which has been hand crafted by the Tasmanian team who were also taking part – but finished in third place picking up the first Grinch Award!

Alan Rothwell from the Liverpool Santa Dash was complimentary in defeat saying…”whilst it is naturally disappointing to have not won the World Santa Challenge at the first attempt I’m sure we can lift the trophy next year. I’m sure that when the people of Liverpool see how close the final numbers were they will go flat out to beat the Las Vegas team in 2010!”

Although there were just three participants in the first year there is already keen interest from across the world to take part in the World Santa Challenge in 2010. The Tasmanian team have established good links with major cities in Australia and likewise Las Vegas is doing the same in the U.S.A. No doubt their new found status of Winners of the World Santa Challenge will raise the profile of this unique competition.

Alan Rothwell also commented… ” on the back of the first hosting of the World Santa Challenge it is great to see so many other cities across the world are now interested in taking part. I have had contact with eight other European cities about entering the competition next year and if we can get around a dozen competing cities in the second year then that would be absolutely brilliant. Hopefully Liverpool will emerge as winners in 2010 despite the increased competition!”

The raised profile of the World Santa Challenge brought about by the introduction of the annual Challenge Trophy will give any Festive Fun a clear focus in future years. The creator of the trophy, Steve Martin is pleased to see the efforts of the Enormity Charity in Tasmania are helping to bring the Santa Fun Run phenomenon to the world stage saying… “for a relatively small community to have such an impact on a world event is very satisfying indeed. We are absolutely delighted to have been part of the creation of a world initiative and our congratulations go to Linda Smith and her team at Opportunity Village in Las Vegas.”

The last word must go to Linda with Las Vegas being the winners of WSC1. Linda said…” after a lot of hard work and effort from a dedicated team here in Las Vegas I’m thrilled that we have won the first World Santa Challenge. It is just reward for the enormous amount of work that many people in Las Vegas have put in leading up to the event. Our thanks also go to the amazing Santas of Liverpool and Tasmania for taking part. I do hope they will take part once again in 2010… but just remember, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!”

IT’S A BLUE SANTA INVASION ON DECEMBER 6TH!

The Everton Foundation team will bring a splash of colour to the Festive 5K.

It should be easy to spot the Evertonians in the annual Santa Dash this year as the Everton Foundation are arranging a team and they will all be sporting blue Santa suits – which will be a welcome change from the traditional red!!

Last year there were more than 7,000 Santas taking part and they turned the city centre into a sea of red – however, Everton Foundation Fundraising Manager, Rowena Finn, has decided to ring the changes on December 6th by organising her own team to take part.

Anyone running on behalf of the Everton Foundation will be given the limited edition Blue Santa suit to run in. The team will have a limit of 500 and places will be available on a first – come – first – served basis.

Rowena said – “the idea of a blue Santa suit is certainly different and I know that many Evertonians have been asking in recent years about blue suits rather than the traditional red. I’m sure they will go down well with the Evertonians.”

Saturday, 18th July and the first hint of Christmas!

Yes it’s the height of summer and Liverpool is already picking up a Santa Run World Challenge thrown down by the good folk of Las Vegas and Tasmania.

Linda Smith from Opportunity Village in Las Vegas and Steve Martin from the Enormity Organisation in Tasmania will be flying into Liverpool with the official World Championship Trophy for Running Santas. The trophy has been carved by hand in Tasmania and will be presented to Liverpool and Las Vegas by way of a global challenge to see who can create the biggest Santa Fun Run this year.

Liverpool held the official Guinness World Record in 2005 but the classification was for a ‘gathering’ and in 2007 Derry in Northern Ireland managed a staggering 13,000 for a gathering – but it wasnâ€™t a run. Linda Smith from Las Vegas managed to host the biggest fun run that year but was beaten by the Derry gathering. Linda was massively disappointed, having fallen just short of the Liverpool Santa Dash totals in 2005 and 2006. She said…

â€œeveryone in the States was really down when we found out that we had eventually beaten Liverpool – but were nowhere near the massive gathering in Derry. So, we came up with the idea of putting up a World Santa Run Trophy and Steve and the team from Tasmania have made this fantastic hand-carved Santa Trophy. I just hope that Las Vegas will be the first winners of this prestigious title.â€

The challenge is open to any Santa Run in the world and between July and December the Santa Run team will be accepting official entries from around the globe. There are already six enquiries from European cities.
The launch in Liverpool will also see Radio City and the Cash For Kids charity announce their official involvement with the Liverpool Santa Dash. The launch will be announced from the Radio City tower on the morning of Saturday, 18th July and then an open top Santa bus will travelling around the city centre showing off the city to Linda and Steve and the new trophy to the people of Liverpool.

Organisers of the Liverpool Run are inviting 25 Santas to come and join them on the open top bus tour for the official launch on Saturday, 18th July at Radio City. Santa suits are available for use on the day. Be quick if you want to get involved!

For the last three years the Santa Dash entry fee has remained at Â£15 and has delivered very good value for money as well as a fantastic day out.

However, due to recent increases in the cost of the Santa suits and medals (which are imported from China) as well as most other logistical delivery costs including the Traffic Order for road closures from Liverpool City Council Highways Department (to approximately Â£7,000) it is necessary to increase the entry fee this year to Â£20.

The increase has been kept to a minimum and it will ensure that the event is delivered to the standard expected by all those taking part.

Having missed the 2008 World Record by 237 [the record going to Las Vegas again], the organisers of the Liverpool Santa Dash 2009 are frantically working hard, locked away in a secret location preparing a race that will become the World Record Beater of 2009! We are not alone however. Our arch rivals in Las Vegas are keen to make sure no one takes their beloved World Record away from the. Also hot on our tail is Newtown in Mid Wales, the original World Record holders from a few years ago. They are hoping to snatch back the record for one final time, as reports suggest it will be their last ever Santa Run.

Liverpool have already had a flurry of entries which at present stands at 12! Liverpool must ensure that they can attract over 7,269 runners this year. I’ve already written my Christmas list for Santa.

“Dear Santa,

I’ve been a very good boy this year so far. I’ve kept most of my New Year resolutions with the exception of the beer consumption. Top of my list this year is the Guinness World Record for Liverpool.”

Liverpool Santa Dash 2008 A HUGE SUCCESS!

On a freezing cold Sunday morning [the temperature was below zero I believe] I gathered my camera, put on my gloves, defrosted the car and drove to Liverpool City Center for what promised to be the best Liverpool Santa Dash ever. I couldn’t run this year due to a recurring foot injury.

On my arrival into ‘town’, I began my quest to photograph Liverpool’s Santas in all their glory before, during and after the event.

After arriving at the Mann Island area of Liverpool’s World famous Pier Head, it wasn’t long before the freezing cold Santas began assembling for the beginning of the race, I admit I felt out of place but I was much warmer than most! I was glad to see local media around and about, the race MC was Alan Jackson of BBC Radio Merseyside. A fabulous job as usual from ‘our Alan’.

I took my position and waited for the race to begin. Alan Rothwell [the organiser] turned up after last minute checks, ensuring the course was safe for the thousands of Santas.

After the usual ten second count down, the race began and the competitive Santas dashed off as fast as they could without slipping. I witnessed a rather silly lady with a push chair arrive as the race began who preceded to walk towards the start line from the wrong side, rather from behind the start sign. She was quickly surrounded and engulfed by hundreds of runners putting herself and the child in the push chair at some considerable risk.

I didn’t hang around and quickly walked towards the finish line, in front of Liverpool’s wonderful Town Hall. It was an amazing site to look down Liverpool’s Dale Street towards Churchill Way and see the thousands of Santas in the distance, zigzagging over the flyover. It wasn’t long before the runners began arriving home to a shower of snow.

It amazes me how these athletes complete it in such a quick time, one of the first finishers even ran it with his child on his shoulders, stopping after wards to check his time!

Shortly after, I decided to ‘call it a day’ and take the cold walk back to the car feeling rather sorry for myself due to me inability to run this year. Ah well, roll on Liverpool Santa Dash 2009!
