Many of you will have noticed a number of blue Santas in the 2009 Santa Dash. There were around 300 Evertonians running in their favourite colour on behalf of the Everton Foundation and this year there will be once again a limited number of blue suits.

If you wish to run in a blue Santa suit and run on behalf of the Everton Foundation then please download the special Everton Foundation Entry Form when you enter.

Yes – the Liverpool Santa Dash is back again and in 2010 we are targeting 10,000 entries to ensure we get the World Santa Challenge title back from Las Vegas.

In 2009 we were beaten by just a few Santas and it was hugely disappointing to see the first World Santa Challenge title and the trophy go across the pond. The official numbers entered in the Great Santa Run in Vegas was a staggering 8,868 although more than 1,000 didn’t actually take part. So – to be safe we are targeting 10,000 for Liverpool this year.

If you haven’t taken part before then you’ve never seen anything like it. It is something special to see and be a part of. If you have done it before then it’s great to have you back. Bring your friends, relatives and anyone else you know and let’s make sure the title comes back to Liverpool this year!

Liverpool Santa Dash 2009 has to be The Best Ever!

Over 7,000 [TBC] off-duty Santas lined the famous Liverpool Waterfront today for the annual gathering of Santas, ready to race in what has become the UK’s largest gathering of Santas. The atmosphere built up from 8.30am to a crescendo of Ho! Ho! Hos! as Santas from far and wide began arriving in front of the World Famous Pier Head, a World Heritage Site.

I arrived at Exchange Flags, near the official finish line ready to meet up with members of the Rhys Jones Memorial Fund, who kindly invited me to be their photographer for the race. Included in their team were Big Brother winner, Craig Phillips and Michael Shields. They were joined by The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Mike Storey CBE.

Afterwards, we hurried towards the start line to join the thousands of other Santas who were already warming up with the help of members of the Santa Dash community who kindly took to the stage to warm up everyone’s muscles before the race. This, accompanied by a drumming band and festive music ensured that the gathering crowd became excited and eager to start.

Shortly after 9.30am we were once again joined by The Lord Mayor of Liverpool who was there to start the race. The race began with the usual sprint from the beginning from those who use the opportunity to add a competitive edge to the gathering. It was nice to see so many blue Santas this year, officially endorsed by the organisers and who ran for The Everton Foundation Team.

I knew that 20 minutes after the race had begun; some of those more competitive Santas would be arriving at the finish line, so I quickly began to run towards Liverpool’s stunning Town Hall. Here the finishers were treated to a blanket of snow plus applause from the watching crowd. Once again, looking down to the bottom of Dale Street were hundreds of Santas snaking up and over onto the Churchill Way Flyover was a site to behold. Then the heavens opened, it began to pour down and I decided to call it a day and make that bizarre journey back to car walking with wet, tired Santas!

The organisers pulled it out the bag this year, providing what was in my opinion, the best Santa Dash ever! Fingers crossed we have regained that World Record which we narrowly missed last year!

This year Wessex Heartbeat has been chosen as the benefiting charity for the fun 5km run/walk/dash which is taking place on Southampton Common on Sunday 13th December.

The Common is a area of stunning natural beauty so don’t worry if you get their early, there’s plenty to see before and after all that Santa Dashing. It’s the largest open space in the City boundaries (326 acre site). It’s also a haven for flora and fauna and has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest with the inclusion of the Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre which gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the local ecology and wildlife.

The Southampton Santa dash is a scenic, slightly undulating in places, course that we’re confident will give you that elusive “great I’ve escaped the city for an hour” feeling. The Start/Finish line is halfway up Coronation Avenue south. The course is basically a well balanced couple of laps of Southampton Common. There are a couple of long straights for those that are looking for a PB and superb scenery for those that aren’t. continues

A big thank you to everyone who entered the Fun Run and to the spectators who turned out to cheer encouragement, it made the event a big success. We had a fantastic turnout with over 760 Santa’s running/walking through the town so congratulations to all those who completed the Fun Run and we hope you collected your finisher’s medal.

Derry in Northern Ireland Santa Dash

It has emerged that Derry in Northern Ireland have come to the fore in the Santa battle this Christmas. Derry Event organiser Martin Mullan contacted the Liverpool office to issue a World Record warning with the announcement of a new event in the city on December 9th. They have targeted 10,001 Santas in the first year and Martin is convinced they will not only get the 10,000 but the World record as well. Martin said…” when we saw the fantastic impact the Liverpool Santa Dash has on the city we decided Derry should have one as well! it looks an absolutely brilliant day and I can’t wait for ours. Liverpool has done well in the last two years but we believe it is time to bring the record to Derry!’.

Glasgow Santa Dash

With expectancy raised to a new level in Las Vegas there is now a second threat to Liverpool- but not so far away! The Glasgow Santa Dash will take place in the city center on Sunday, 16th December. This is the first time Glasgow has staged a Santa Dash and they have been prompted by the huge popularity shown in Liverpool. The Glasgow Santa Dash will be supporting the Marina Dalglish Appeal and a local charity in the first year. Liverpool and Celtic icon Kenny Dalglish will be running in the event and he has the backing of Glasgow City Council, all the local media and the Royal Bank of Scotland!

300 Santas jog across Folkestone

Shoppers in a Kent town centre were treated to the sight of 300 jogging Santas taking part in a fun run on Sunday, 4 December 2005. The 6km (3.7m) run in Folkestone was organised by the town’s Rotary Club, to raise money for Kent Air Ambulance and other charities. Spokesman Derek Harris said it was the fun run’s second year and members hoped to raise at least Ã‚Â£5,000.

The atmosphere last year was absolutely superb. It is a fun event for the town as well as the runners – there is nothing like a lot of people dressed as Santa running through a town centre.

Four thousand six hundred Father Christmases donned red and white robes on Sunday 4th December 2005 for the fifth annual Santa Run through Newtown in Powys. The 4.5-mile race through the town was officially started by Welsh paralympian Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson. Newtown holds the world record for the world’s biggest Santa gathering.
